Manual or automatic? How to choose your licence

Royal Motoring School · 12 July 2026

A manual (Category B) licence covers both manual and automatic cars. Manual cars cost roughly €2,000 less to buy, parts are cheaper, and fuel consumption is about 20% lower — and most rentals and many jobs require manual.

Automatic (B AUTO) is easier to learn and more relaxing in traffic, but you'll only ever drive automatics. Our advice: learn manual if you can — it keeps every option open. And at Royal you can switch between manual and automatic cars during your course, anytime.
