Pass your test and you receive a probationary licence valid for 3 years before graduating to the full 10-year licence. During probation the penalty-points system applies with less headroom, and hitting 12 points revokes the licence.
The strictest rule: alcohol. Probationary drivers face a 0.02% blood-alcohol limit — effectively zero — versus 0.05% for experienced drivers. One drink can end your licence. Our position after 55 years: if you're driving, don't drink at all.
